India ranks fourth globally in e-waste production, generating nearly 2 million tonnes in 2016. Sadly, only 20% of global e-waste is recycled, with less than 2% responsibly recycled through formal channels in India.

Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE or e-waste) is among the fastest-growing waste streams globally. The Combined Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of e-waste generation is estimated at 30%.

Mizuki E-Waste

E-waste or electronics recycling is the process of reclaiming materials from old devices for reuse in new products.

E-waste in India

According to the Global E-Waste Monitor, 44.7 million metric tonnes of e-waste were produced in 2016, equivalent to almost 4,500 Eiffel Towers.

The Rules

The 2016 rules were founded on Extended Producer Responsibility, outlining targets for producers to meet their obligations. These rules introduced provisions for a Producer Responsibility Organisation. With a subsequent amendment in March 2018, PROs are now mandated to obtain authorization from CPCB.

E-waste Management

To address the severe health and environmental impacts of manual recycling operations, India introduced the E-waste (Management and Handling) Rules in 2011. Subsequently, an amendment led to the E-waste (Management) Rules in 2016.
